SXSW Music Panel: Does Rock and Roll Belong in a Museum?

12:30 - 1:30 p.m., Austin Convention Center, Austin TX

The Rock Hall will discuss ‘Does Rock and Roll Belong in a Museum?’ at the SXSW Music Festival in 2010. Initially, many thought the idea of the Rock Hall was antithetical to the spirit of rock and roll. Despite its success, the question of whether rock and roll belongs in a museum persists. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s panel will address the relevance, importance and future of the preservation and education about this art form.

Great Music. No Limits. Celebrating 35 Years of Austin City Limits

Exhibit Opens March 20, 2010 in the Circular Gallery

Celebrating its 35th season, Austin City Limits is the longest-running music series in American television history. ACL recorded its first program with Willie Nelson in October 1974 at KLRU-TV at the University of Texas. Showcasing roots music, legends and innovative popular music from every genre, the series has become a music icon and has helped build Austin’s reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” ACL is the only television program to ever receive the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest award for artistic excellence, and was recently selected as a Rock and Roll Landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibit includes photographs, set lists, contracts, program logs, tickets and other items from the show. A film featuring show highlights from the last 35 years will also be featured.

The Museum maintains an active schedule of events and exhibitions. The Hall of Fame Series brings inductees to small audiences for discussions about their lives, a period for questions from the audience and, often, live performances. In addition, lectures, films, panel discussions and performances are scheduled throughout the year. Several times a year the Museum mounts temporary exhibitions, including everything from block-buster shows to intimate photography displays.

All events are subject to change.
